When it comes to Deer Stalking there are two key factors you need to think about; Usability and Light Transmission. If you can source an optic within your budget that allows you to use both of these to your advantage then you will be set up to the best of your abilities.

  1. Usability- When we say usability we are predominantly talking about magnification. High mag is generally not required for stalking and time has told us this with the 8x56 combo on a scope being the leading choice in the discipline. So either find yourself a fixed mag scope with a larger objective or a smooth magnifying minimal range scope, i.e. 2.5-15x.
  2. Light Transmission - Species identification is without a doubt the most important factor of Deer Stalking, knowing what animal to take and when you are allowed to take it. With this in mind a scope with high light transmission will allow you to achieve this. This can be achieved in two ways. One is to buy a high end European scope with fantastic glass or the more realistic option if this is not affordable is to opt for a scope with a larger objective. The latter allows more light to go through the scope and achieve a clearer image.
